Present when Performance Matters

The world sees the performance. I see the person.

Long after the applause has faded and the headlines have moved on, something remarkable almost always happens. The stories begin to surface. An athlete speaks publicly for the first time about the injury that nearly ended their career. A documentary reveals the years of self doubt that existed behind the confidence everyone thought they saw. A leader reflects on the pressure of making decisions while carrying the weight of an entire organisation. A Formula 1 team shares the countless setbacks that preceded a championship. A footballer finally talks about what they were carrying into a World Cup Final. A business owner explains how close everything came to falling apart before a merger or acquisition changed the future of the company. The world listens with disbelief and almost always asks the same question… how did they ever overcome all of that?

I always find myself smiling quietly because, for me, the answer has never been mysterious. That has been my life’s work. Long before the interviews are recorded and the backstory becomes part of the public conversation, I have already had the privilege of watching that story unfold. I have seen the uncertainty, the fear, the frustration and the moments where continuing felt harder than giving up. I have also watched something far more powerful emerge as those same people slowly discovered a level of resilience, belief and emotional freedom they never realised they possessed. The performance the world eventually celebrates has always been the visible expression of a journey that very few people were fortunate enough to witness.

That is why my attention has never settled on medals, championships, contracts or trophies. They are extraordinary achievements and deserve every moment of celebration they receive, although they have never been the part of the story that moves me most deeply. My mind is always drawn back to the quiet moments where someone stopped seeing themselves as limited by fear and began trusting the person they were becoming. Watching that growth has always been infinitely more rewarding than watching the performance because performances belong to a moment, while growth becomes part of a person’s life forever.

When the cameras finally arrive, they naturally focus on the achievement. Mine never do. I am still looking at the person standing inside that moment, remembering the conversations nobody else heard, the setbacks nobody else witnessed and the courage that quietly accumulated over months and sometimes years. While everyone else is celebrating what has just happened, I often find myself celebrating everything that had to happen beforehand for that moment to become possible.

There have been many occasions where I have stood quietly to one side, watching the world celebrate someone I know so well, and found tears in my own eyes. They are never there because of the medal, the championship, the successful acquisition or the victory itself. They are there because I know exactly what that person had to overcome simply to give themselves the opportunity to stand there. Seeing another human being become someone they once believed was impossible has always been my reward. Everything else is simply the moment the rest of the world finally gets to see it.

Stand tall… I’ve got you!
