The Athlete’s Secret Weapon Story

The Athlete’s Secret Weapon was never really meant to become a brand. It grew from a series of moments and experiences that eventually gave a name to something I had already been doing quietly behind the scenes for years.

When I started my business more than 20 years ago, it was called Vision Hypnotherapy Solutions. The idea behind Vision was simple… what you can see, you can begin to create. As I started working with more athletes, Vision Hypnotherapy for Sports developed alongside it, driven by something that fascinated me from the beginning. Incredible physical ability and preparation did not always determine what happened when it was time to perform, and I became increasingly interested in understanding what made that difference.

Then came London 2012, where I had been working with Australian diver Brittany Broben as she prepared for her first Olympic Games. At just 16, Brittany produced an extraordinary performance to win silver in the 10 metre platform, and as people began asking what had changed and what had helped her make such a significant shift, she had a wonderfully simple response. She wasn’t telling anyone about her secret weapon.

That stayed with me, and around the same time I was developing an online program that would take some of the processes I was using privately with athletes to a much wider audience. I knew what I wanted the program to do, although I still had no idea what to call it. During a conversation with a good friend and colleague in the fitness industry, she simply asked me who the program was for. I said athletes, and suddenly Brittany’s reference to her secret weapon connected with the very people I was creating the program for. The Athlete’s Secret Weapon. The name was there, and more importantly, it made complete sense.

It captured something I had already learned about elite sport. When athletes find something that genuinely gives them an edge, they tend to protect it. If you discovered something that helped you access more of your ability when everything was on the line, why would you hand that advantage to everyone you were competing against? The secret was the edge that stayed behind the scenes, while the weapon was the power of being able to access more of what was already inside you when it mattered.

What began as the name of an online program released in 2014 gradually became something much bigger. That original program continued to evolve through years of working with athletes and eventually became what is now Head Start, while The Athlete’s Secret Weapon became the product, the philosophy, the brand and, somewhere along the way, the name people began using for me as well. I hear it particularly within motorsport, where I’ve worked with around 120 professional racing drivers around the world. I can walk through a paddock now and rather than hearing “Hey Stuart”, I hear “Hey Weapon”. Somehow, the name stuck.

Underneath that name has always been the same fascination with finding the edge, not by trying to turn an athlete into somebody else, rather by understanding more deeply what is already there. The ability, preparation and potential already exist, and my work has increasingly become about understanding what influences access to that potential, then helping create the internal environment where more of it becomes available when performance matters.

Elite sport has been an extraordinary environment in which to develop that understanding because performance becomes so visible. There is a starting line, a scoreboard, a stopwatch and a result, yet over the years I began recognising the same human performance patterns far beyond sport. A CEO entering a boardroom, an entrepreneur making a decision that affects an organisation or a leader communicating when the consequences matter is still asking themselves to perform. The arena may change, although the person underneath the performance remains human.

That is where The Athlete’s Secret Weapon connects so naturally with the Elite Mindset Institute. The Athlete’s Secret Weapon remains my specialist world for athletes and elite performers, shaped and refined through more than 20 years inside elite sport. The Elite Mindset Institute takes that understanding into the broader world of human performance across sport, business, leadership and life, because ultimately performance is simply the part everybody gets to see.

What has always fascinated me far more is the person who creates it.
